What You Should Avoid Doing After a Loved One Has Been Arrested

Written on June 9, 2018. Posted In Uncategorized

It can be scary and frustrating to see a loved one handcuffed and placed in the back of a police car. However, the actions you take after your loved one has been arrested can have an impact on their case. There are many things that your loved one shouldn’t avoid doing, such as resisting arrest and providing law enforcement with any statements. But there are also certain things that you should avoid doing as well. Here are three things that you should always avoid doing after a loved one has been arrested.

Making a Scene with the Officers

If you are present when your loved one is being arrested, you should always try to remain calm. The things you say when your loved one is being arrested can be used against that person in court. Additionally, if you make a scene or get in the officer’s way, you can find yourself with charges as well. Lastly, it is important that you remain calm and level-headed for your loved one. They are likely more scared than you are, so they need you to be calm for their sake. You cannot prevent your loved one from being arrested by pleading their case to the officers, so don’t even try.

Going to the Jail Right Away

After your loved one is arrested, you may try to go down to the jail to talk to your loved one right away. However, jails go through a booking process before inmates can have visitors. This may take several hours. New inmates may also have visitor restrictions until they settle into the jail and get a housing assignment. Contact the jail before you arrive to find out if your loved one can have visitors and when.

Posting Information Online

The last thing you should avoid doing after your loved one is arrested is to post information online, including your social media accounts. Many people are quick to post their side of the story online. However, what you post may be used against your loved one. If you need to vent or talk to someone, pick up the phone and call a close friend or relative rather than posting online for everyone to see.

After your loved one has been arrested, take the time to find out if they have bail and what the amount is, and then work with a bail bonds agent to help free your loved one. At Free at Last Bail Bonds, we are fully committed to reuniting families.
